Engaging the Next Generation in STEM, Celebrating 10 Years of STEM Goes Red

Overhead view of educational stations with girls in red shirts crowded throughout. This year marks the 10th anniversary of STEM Goes Red, a milestone that reflects a decade of inspiring young students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

At the American Heart Association, we believe the future of health and innovation depends on the next generation of scientists, engineers, and healthcare leaders. STEM Goes Red was created to help students see themselves in these careers and build the confidence and connections to pursue them.
Designed for students in grades 7–9, the program offers hands-on activities and opportunities to connect with professionals in STEM. While open to all students, it especially encourages girls to explore these fields and helps address the gender gap in STEM.

Why It Matters

STEM careers drive innovation, strengthen our economy and improve lives. Women remain significantly underrepresented in many STEM professions, particularly women of color. Although women earn more than half of all college degrees, they are still less likely to pursue and remain in STEM careers.

By introducing students to role models, real-world applications and career opportunities at an early age, STEM Goes Red helps bridge this gap and empowers young people to envision a future in STEM.

Bringing STEM to Life

Group of girls coming down the stairs into the educational area.STEM Goes Red connects students with local STEM professionals who share their experiences and demonstrate how STEM is used every day to solve problems and improve communities. Through these interactions, students gain firsthand insight into a wide variety of career paths while building valuable skills, confidence and curiosity.

Many participants leave STEM Goes Red with a new understanding of what's possible, discovering careers they never knew existed and seeing how they can make a meaningful impact through STEM.

Creating Change Together

STEM Goes Red’s success is driven by the support of local sponsors, schools, volunteers and STEM professionals committed to investing in the next generation. Together, we help students unlock their potential and build a future shaped by diverse perspectives and talents.

As we celebrate 10 years of STEM Goes Red, we look forward to continuing to inspire future leaders and expand opportunities for students across our community.
